Originally used in temples to divide space — with one side for gods and the other for humans — sudare screens are an age-old solution for controlling temperature and lighting in your space.

This screen is made from delicately slatted bamboo, which diffuses light. Designed for indoor and sheltered use, it can be unfurled to your preferred length for privacy, cooling, and space separation.

For a sudare designed to withstand the elements, take a look at our Outdoor Sudare Screen.

FREE SHIPPING on orders $300+ USD in Asia Pacific region, $350+ USD in other regions. Our products are shipped from Japan and may be subject to import duties, which are the responsibility of the buyer. Import duties are not covered by free shipping.

Nishikawa

The Nishikawa workshop was founded in 1831, and has been making bamboo products for almost 200 years. Before their founding, Kyoto bamboo crafts had focused on everyday items such as colanders, but by incorporating the cultures of tea ceremony and flower arrangement, the second generation of the family laid the foundation for Kyoto bamboo crafts as we know them today. They are known for their sudare blinds and bamboo weaving.

Today, the Nishikawa workshop is passionate about facing the challenge of carrying on the tradition of bamboo craftsmanship, especially as the industry faces decline. They remain committed to selecting high quality materials and preserving traditional techniques.
