Miyagawa Mirror S

Kazuto Yoshikawa, a Tokyo-based designer with deep roots in traditional Japanese woodworking, collaborated with the Miyagawa family-run workshop that has been making frames since 1946.

The intention of the project was to preserve the hinoki wood-bending process. The workshop historically created these frames to display calligraphy in tea rooms, but has since lain dormant.

The collaboration utilizes ethically-sourced hinoki wood from Toyota’s sustainably managed forests in Mie and applies the traditional technique to a modern and contemporary design.

Since its founding in 1946, Mie Gakubuchi has remained the handcrafted production of wooden frames, making it one of the few manufacturers in Japan with the expertise of production in-house.
Founded in the aftermath of World War II, the company was established with the hope of creating something peaceful using the abundant wood available in the local area.
The Miyagawa Mirror Collection utilizes extensive knowledge and woodworking experience, including highly specialized wood-bending techniques. This colleciton, likely, could not have been realized by another manufacturer.
